THERMOSEAL

HEAT-INSULATING BASE COAT FOR METAL ROOFS

Appearance

Available Sizes

ThermoSeal is a thermal barrier coat for metal roofs. It goes on between the primer and the topcoat, and it is packed with hollow ceramic spheres that slow down heat moving from the sun-baked roof surface into the building below. ThermoSeal is not a roof paint. The layer is porous, so it must always be overcoated with 2 coats of Cool Roof or another high-quality metal roof paint. The topcoat seals ThermoSeal against the weather and gives the roof its finish; ThermoSeal underneath does the insulating. Finished with Cool Roof, the roof works twice: Cool Roof reflects the sun off the surface, and ThermoSeal slows down the heat that still gets through.

Ideal for

Metal roofs over living and working space IBR,corrugated, Widedek and Zincalume roofs on homes, offices and workshops where the heat comes straight through the sheeting.

Factories and warehouses Large metal roofs where staff, stock and machinery suffer under the heat.

Agricultural buildings and silos Pack-houses, livestock shelters, workshops and grain silos.

Container conversions and park homes Steel shells that turn into ovens in summer.

Schools, clinics and community halls Metal-roofed buildings without air conditioning.

HOW IT WORKS

HOW IT WORKS A THERMAL BREAK BETWEEN THE SUN AND THE BUILDING

A bare metal roof heats up in the sun and passes that heat straight down into the building. ThermoSeal puts a thermal break in that path. ThermoSeal is a water-based acrylic coating filled with hollow ceramic spheres. Each sphere is a tiny pocket that heat struggles to cross. Built up in two coats to 1.5–2 mm, the spheres form an insulating layer that slows heat conducting from the hot topcoat down to the metal sheet and into the building. Because the layer is made of packed spheres, it is porous. That is why ThermoSeal always needs a topcoat: the topcoat keeps out rain and moisture, and ThermoSeal does the insulating underneath it.

Where ThermoSeal sits in the system

ThermoSeal is one layer in a complete SealPro metal roof system:

  1. Wash and degrease the full roof.
  2. Wire-brush and spot-treat badly rusted sections with Referro.
  3. Prime the complete roof with Purple Prime.
  4. Waterproof screw lines and overlaps with the StretchSeal Flex system, and seal screw heads with ScrewSeal patches.
  5. Apply ThermoSeal: 2 coats, 1.5–2 mm in total.
  6. Once ThermoSeal is touch dry, finish with 2 coats of Cool Roof, or another high-quality metal roof paint, covering every bit of ThermoSeal.

KEY BENEFITS

THERMOSEAL SOLAR HEAT REFLECTIVE COATING TEMPERATURE

1/ SLOWS HEAT COMING THROUGH THE ROOF

The ceramic-sphere layer puts a thermal break between the hot roof surface and the building.

2/ MADE TO PAIR WITH COOL ROOF

Cool Roof reflects the sun on top; ThermoSeal insulates underneath. Together they tackle heat twice.

3/ A COOLER BUILDING

Less heat through the roof means cooler rooms under it and less work for fans and air conditioning.

4/ LESS MOVEMENT IN THE METAL

Less heat reaching the sheeting means less daily expansion and contraction at screws and overlaps.

5/ WATER-BASED AND NON-FLAMMABLE

Low VOC (under 1%), cleans up with water. Apply by brush, roller or airless spray.

GETTING STARTED

PREPARATION & APPLICATION

Surface Preparation

The cause of most coating failures is poor surface preparation. ThermoSeal goes on only after the roof is fully prepared:

  1. Wash and degrease the whole roof with a high-pressure washer, degreaser and detergent. Remove all loose or flaking paint. Let it dry completely.
  2. Treat the rust. Spot-treat badly rusted, pitted sections with Referro.
  3. Prime the complete roof with Purple Prime.
  4. Waterproof the details. Seal screw lines and overlaps with the StretchSeal Flex system and screw heads with ScrewSeal before ThermoSeal goes on.

Application Instructions

  • Stir thoroughly before use.
  • Apply 2 coats of ThermoSeal by brush, roller or airless spray, building up 1.5–2 mm in total. A 20 L pail covers 10–12 m².
  • Touch dry in 1–2 hours at about 25°C. Apply the second coat once the first is touch dry.
  • Once the second coat is touch dry, apply 2 coats of Cool Roof, or another high-quality metal roof paint.
  • Full cure takes 7 days at about 25°C. This is curing time, not a waiting time: the topcoat goes on once ThermoSeal is touch dry.
  • Cover every bit of ThermoSeal with the topcoat. Exposed ThermoSeal lets moisture in, which can cause blistering and delamination.

APPLICATION

Brush, roller or airless spray. Touch dry in 1-2 hours.

Important

NEVER LEAVE THERMOSEAL EXPOSED ThermoSeal is an insulating base coat, not a finish. It is porous and must be fully covered by 2 coats of topcoat. Uncovered ThermoSeal will take in water and can blister and delaminate.
